A note to Tucows Downloads visitors:

HDD Regenerator does not change the logical structure of a hard disk drive. Therefore the file system may contain logical bad sectors marked earlier, and other disk utilities such as Scandisk will detect bad sectors even if the hard drive is successfully regenerated by HDD Regenerator. In addition, the presence of bad sectors in the hard disk is one of the common issues which are responsible for the corruption of.pst file. Thus it becomes essential to repair PST file with an appropriate method or a utility. To understand the issue in detail, let’s consider a scenario. Suppose the hard disk of your laptop crashed. If you want to force HDD to relocate bad sectors, you need to either perfrom non-short disk format or use a tool like DBAN, which sanitize disk space and as result, force HDD to relocate sectors. Please do note, that it both cases you will lose all your data.

All good things…

We have made the difficult decision to retire the Tucows Downloads site. We’re pleased to say that much of the software and other assets that made up the Tucows Downloads library have been transferred to our friends at the Internet Archive for posterity.

The shareware downloads bulletin board system (BBS) that would become Tucows Downloads was founded back in 1993 on a library computer in Flint, MI. What started as a place for people in the know to download software became the place to download software on the burgeoning Internet. Far more quickly than anyone could have imagined.

A lot has changed since those early years. Tucows has grown and evolved as a business. It’s been a long time since Tucows has been TUCOWS, which stood for The Ultimate Collection of Winsock Software.

Today, Tucows is the second-largest domain name registrar in the world behind Go Daddy and the largest wholesaler of domain names in the world with customers like Shopify and other global website builder platforms. Hover offers domain names and email at retail to help people brand their life online. OpenSRS (and along the way our acquisitions of Enom, Ascio and EPAG) are the SaaS platforms upon which tens of thousands of customers have built their own domain registration businesses, registering tens of millions of domains on behalf of their customers. Ting Internet is building fiber-optic networks all over the U.S. At the same time, we’re building the Mobile Services Enabler SaaS platform that is powering DISH’s entry into the US mobile market.

Point is, we’re keeping busy.

For the past several years, history, well sentimentality, has been the only reason to keep Tucows Downloads around. We talked about shutting the site down before. Most seriously in 2016 when instead, we decided to go ad-free, keeping the site up as a public service.

Today is different. Tucows Downloads is old. Old sites are a maintenance challenge and therefore a risk. Maintaining the Tucows Downloads site pulls people away from the work that moves our businesses forward.

Tucows Downloads has had an incredible run. Retiring it is the right move but that doesn’t alter the fact that it will always hold a special place in hearts and our story. We’re thankful to the thousands of software developers who used Tucows Downloads to get their software in front of millions of people, driving billions of downloads over more than 25 years.

Thank you.
Sincerely,
Elliot Noss
CEO, Tucows

Summary:At some point of time hard drives are prone to have bad sectors but do you know how you can fix them. This guide will let you know everything about bad sectors and how you can fix them.

It’s a rarity that when a good hard disk comes up with one or more sectors, the disk goes bad; and, when such a situation occurs, often the data stored in the bad sectors may get lost, but the remaining data on the disk will remain unaffected. Above all, the disk is still in the functional state.

Indeed, we can mark them as unusable so that the Operating System will not attempt to store data over them. But, the major downside of this is a dip in the total disk capacity as this reduces the storage space amount.

There are scenarios when the cause of bad sectors could be a faulty drive head. In such cases, there is a likelihood of spreading the issue to several other sectors of the disk. Therefore, in situations where the hard drive experiences one or more bad sectors, it is highly advisable to backup the disk and try to repair bad sectors in the hard drive instantly.

Here, we guide you on how you can fix bad sectors in hard drive and recover data from it. However, before we look into it, let’s have a quick overview of the Bad Sectors, their symptoms and causes.

What is a Bad Sector?

In simple words, it is a section in the hard drive that becomes inaccessible or corrupted. This tiny defective cluster of storage space won’t respond to any read or write requests. They are of two types—one that results due to a software error and other because of a physical damage.

What are the Reasons for Bad Sectors?

Broadly speaking, there are two major categories — Logical and Physical. The below table shows each category and their reasons—

Logical Bad SectorsPhysical Bad Sectors
System CrashHeat
Virus InfectionDust
Software ConflictImpact
Sudden ShutdownWear out
Reboot Of ComputerDefective Blocks
Sudden Power OutageOverclocked PCI Bus Speeds

What are Signs that Indicate Bad sectors in the Hard Drive?

The following are the common signs and symptoms that indicate bad sectors in a Hard Drive:

  • Generation of strange noises on booting, especially at the time of read/write and hard disk drive opening
  • Generation of Error Message— Files become corrupt while running a program or reading a file.
  • System is consuming a long time to run a program or read a file.
  • System showing a Blue Screen
  • When your system shows warning message such as a “General error in reading drive C” or “Sector not found”, even though it is not attacked by a virus
  • When Windows fail to complete the hard disk drive format—Quick as well as Full
  • When the System every time, upon booting, auto-runs the Scandisk to scan errors in the hard drive

If you see any of the afore-stated symptoms then you should repair bad sectors immediately for the sake of data security and integrity.
